2012 Houston Fringe Festival Featured Visual Artists:

Jessica Harby is a visual artist from Chicago now residing in the United Kingdom. Her work explores the malleability of the self, drawing on a feeling of foreignness, the idea of young women being treated as vessels for ideas, and the social construct of villainy. Jessica’s first solo show took place in Northampton, UK this February, and was entitled Pretty Girls Doing Horrid Things. She received her BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Bret Harmeyer, a native of New Orleans, studied at the Savannah College of Art and Design before moving to Houston. In his watercolors, he places invented figures in imagined landscapes, which together create an atmosphere of contradiction and disquiet. He collaborated with his wife Rachel in their 2010 dual exhibition The Anatomy Lesson in Houston. Bret has participated in many group shows in the city and elsewhere in the United States.

Rachel Harmeyer is a visual artist, a student of art history, and a Houston native. Her passions as an artist and an art historian often overlap: she is fascinated with the history of domestic craft, decorative arts, material culture, and mourning rituals. She received her BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and is working towards her MA in Art History at the University of Houston. She has shown her work in several group shows in both Houston and Chicago.

Vennessa Hartsfield has an academic background in medical science rather than visual art, however, she has been painting and drawing from an early age. Printmaking is a recent development for her, which she employs in her process as she explores issues of identity and femininity in her current print works. She has exhibited her work in group shows in Houston.

Betsy Huete is a visual artist and current MFA graduate student at the University of Houston. In her practice she works with a diverse array of materials, from wood sculpture to human hair. She holds a BA in Visual Art, and BFA in Sculpture from Rice University, and studied Sculpture while at the University of Arizona. She has exhibited her work in multiple solo and group shows in Houston, most recently in her solo show Knowing and Not Knowing at Matchbox Gallery, Houston.

Jessica Jacobi employs a variety of media in her visual work, including jewelry and printmaking, among others. She has exhibited her work both nationally and locally: she exhibited in the 2008 Craft Texas show at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft and her work was recently shown in Capricious Curios at Betz Gallery in Houston. She received her BFA in Studio Art at the University of Texas at Austin and her MFA in Metals and Jewelry Design from Texas Tech University.

Sara Renae Lubin is a Chicago-based visual artist. Primarily a painter, she is interested in emblematic and allegorical self-portraiture, and her work examines the self and functions as an intrinsic exploration of her personal path and evolving identity. She has shown her work in many group shows in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, and Houston, among others. She received her BFA with emphasis in Art Education from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Andria Niedzielski is an artist originally from Minneapolis, now based in Chicago. She is fascinated with natural history, biology, and is adept in the delicate art of bird taxidermy. Andria’s work focuses on animals, both the living and the dead, and her work deals with their grace, beauty, and ephemerality. She received her BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and her work has been exhibited in group shows in Chicago.

Kean Robertson is a Houston-based artist and designer. In his visual work, Kean employs complex textures and symbolic imagery, and uses both traditional and new media in his process, ranging from painting and drawing to digital techniques. He has exhibited his work in group shows throughout Houston, and received his BA in Art from the University of Texas at Austin.

Hannah Claire Somerville is a visual artist and designer who grew up in Sarasota, Florida and is now based in Philadelphia. She examines everyday life and finds the beauty in the seemingly mundane: she draws, paints, and makes prints, often printing on textiles which originate in the domestic sphere, such as handmade aprons and dinner napkins. Hannah has participated in group shows in Chicago and Philadelphia and also sold her work online and in boutiques. She received her BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
