Show Feature: “Fallen Angels: Still Confronting The Ground”

May 19th, 2010 · Participants, Shows

OMG! THE HOUSTON FRINGE FESTIVAL STARTS TONIGHT!!!!!

But first! here it is: the very last special show feature. And we’re going out with a good one! It’s “FALLEN ANGELS: Still Confronting the Ground…” from the Houston Metropolitan Dance Company, featuring Met company members Marlana Walsh-Doyle, Jocelyn Thomas, jhon r. stronks and DMJ (Jeremiah DiMatteo).

We asked choreographic director and self-professed “kind of a giant hippie in a dance belt” jhon r. stronks what made this team so special. He replied, “We are all special because our moms all think we are the best ones out there. Marlana is the Managing Director of the Houston Met, Jocelyn Thomas is an HSPVA alumni and can dance anything from the 2 step to some of the craziest Bollywood moves I have ever seen. Jeremiah DiMatteo is a pretty fresh DJ spinnin’ all kinds of stuff from the hippest hop to Gem and Holograms no joke… me and my tacky little dances are fun to do and people seem to like them enough.”

He says that in this version of the piece, the performers will be listening deeply and silently to each other, the audience, the space and themselves. It’s an embodiment (literally!) of jhon’s dance philosophy: “Let’s just dance and behave as the things and beings we want to be. Lets see if by being quiet we can magically make a dance happen without having to try and convince the audience it’s happening. We are all in the same room…now what?” In other words, it’s an exploration of the lines that determine what things are and are not.

For more info on jhon’s work, visit thereinthesunlight.com. Or check out sound designer Jeremiah DiMatteo at www.aceoproductions.com.

Show Feature: “Once More, With Feeling”

May 17th, 2010 · Participants, Shows

Hey Fringe Folks,

The Festival is drawing ever nearer, and we couldn’t be happier to welcome back our friends from Wordsmyth Theater Company. This year, they’re presenting Once More, With Feeling (a power play) by Texas-native, New York-transplant Christina Cigala. It is NOT to be confused with the infamous “Once More, With Feeling” musical episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, in case you were worried about a rerun or anything.

Director Eva Laporte bravely leads the cast of this one-act about Love and Relationships, Writing and Bratwurst, Australians and the Drag Queens who love them. Richard Nelson Gonzalez, Lindsay Ehrhardt, Mia Migliaccio, Brad Goertz & Tom Stell will perform the piece “bare bones with sophistication.”

In this “comic romp with a tender underbelly,” a woman explores her relationship with a past flame, and many other post-modern type moments occur, involving “Love, Snakes, Australians, Bratwurst, Teapots, Directors, Sound cues, Metaphors, that sort of thing.”

Ms. Laporte tells us the author was inspired by a real-life relationship from right here in H-town, but it’s “got a sort of Woody Allen, Annie Hall, New York writer feeling–sort of like if Dan Humphrey and Vanessa Abrams from Gossip Girl grew up a few years and fought it out via a short play contest.” There are also knives. Holy moly! We don’t want to miss that!

Show Feature: “Bring Your Jesus to Class Day” and “Flagellating the Boss”

May 16th, 2010 · Participants, Shows

Hellooo there Fringe Connections,

Here we go again with one of those “show features” you’ve been hearing people talk about. This one is about Six of One Productions (SOOP), who are premiering TWO–YES TWO–new pieces at this year’s Houston Fringe Festival: Bring Your Jesus to Class Day by Abby Koenig & directed by Dennis Draper, and Flagellating the Boss written and directed by Crystal Jackson.

When we asked what the pieces were about, SOOP Artistic Director Crystal Jackson gave us a sidelong glance, sighed, and said “Both titles are fairly literal. In Bring Your Jesus to Class Day, Jesus visits a 4th grade classroom. In Flagellating the Boss, a group of disgruntled coworkers knock their boss on the head – numerous times.” Ok!

This production from SOOP has some pretty cool people involved. For instance, we hear playwright Abby Koenig (you may remember her from HFF 2008’s Notes from a Serial Monogamist) was once on Ricky Lake, so she’s obviously pretty famous. We also heard that it’s likely that audience members will become very attracted throughout the course of the show to one or more of the actors, so…just come prepared for that.

All jokes aside, SOOP has a mission that we can def get on board with – to fight stupidization, “and that fight includes shining a light in dark places. This isn’t to say we provide you with answers; we’re just as confused as the next person. But we at least like to hold up a mirror and say, ‘This is who we are right now. Do we like ourselves?’”

Learn more about Six of One Productions here, and follow them on Twitter!

Show Feature: “Kelly, King of the Fairies”

May 11th, 2010 · Participants, Shows

Hey Fringetots,

This year, an exciting new genre of theatre comes to the Houston Fringe Festival in the form of “Kelly, King of the Fairies: The Fairy Who Wished He Wasn’t.” It’s a show for children! Yay!!

We asked writer/director Paul Salazar, Jr. some hard-hitting questions about his show:

PAUL SALAZAR, JR.: I already know your first question, and yes, it is auto-biographical.

HOUSTON FRINGE FESTIVAL: Really?

PS: Nah, just kidding.

HFF: Oh, ok. So your show’s intended for children, yes?

PS: Yes, but this isn’t a typical “children’s theatre” piece. I wanted to do something kids would want to see and enjoy so I’m treating this show as if I’m making it to entertain my friends. Kids are a lot smarter than we give them credit for. While they might not be able to define character development, story arc and hubris they’ll understand it.

HFF: Who’s involved your show?

PS: I have an all-star cast and crew that could beat any other Fringe Show in a pick-up basketball game. That’s right I’m putting it out there. I’m looking at you Mildred’s Umbrella. To start off with, Alex Bellisle saves children’s lives on a daily basis, honestly. Abby DeBolt is Houston’s tallest actress, I attribute it to her consistent diet of Blue Bell Ice Cream Sandwiches. Salvador Chevez can wield the nunchucks with great vigor and has won the Paul Salazar, Jr look-a-like contest four years in a row. Jason Ronje turned down the role of B.A. Baracus in the upcoming A-Team remake to do the Fringe. Shane Dorman is such an intense method actor he’s actually attending High School this semester. Ben Mattice is a highly accomplished graphics designer and the self-proclaimed best Super Smash Bros player in the Greater Houston Area although designers Jesse and Victor Salazar doubt this claim. (There will be a tournament soon.) And, contrary to popular belief, Traci Thiebaud ran away with the spoon.

HFF: Not the dish, then.

PS: No, it was her.

HFF: That’s quite a crew! What can Festivalgoers expect when they come to see your show?

PS: In a nutshell: catharsis. Specifically, it is a show about a boy fairy named Kelly who is a fairy and doesn’t want to be. He attempts to make himself more awesome than he thinks he is.

HFF: So it’s a show about his transformation into awesomeness.

PS: Not exactly. The show is about being happy with who you are. As kids we feel the social pressure of being liked and conforming who we are with what is popular. Sometimes we lose sight of the fact that what makes us different is what makes us special. As goofy as that sounds, it’s true and as we grow into adulthood we are still being told what we should be. Everyone is unique and that’s what makes us cool. I think it’s important for people to be happy with who they are. I think the more people that get that message the better.

Visit the official website for “Kelly, King of the Fairies: The Fairy Who Wished He Wasn’t,” and come see the show only at the 2010 Houston Fringe Festival!

Show Feature: “Fashion Briefs”

May 11th, 2010 · Participants, Shows

Hey hey hey Fringeites,

We’re super-excited to welcome Code f.a.d. Company to the 2010 Houston Fringe Festival. They’re bringing their piece “Fashion Briefs” to H-town all the way from Raleigh, North Carolina!

Autumn Belk, director, choreographer, and costume designer for the piece, is joined by the entire Code f.a.d. company: Natalee Campbell, Jill Bradley Hall, Gerren Mobley, Kelley Murphy, Brooks Owens, and Christina Serafino. Additionally, all the music in the work was composed by previous collaborator G. Todd Buker (aka Proxy).

In just two seasons, Code f.a.d. have toured across North Carolina, participated in special performances in Washington, D.C. and New York City, and produced their own season in Raleigh. They told us to tell you how very excited they are to bring our work to Texas for the first time!

“Fashion Briefs” is a collection of small dances (solos, duets and trios), inspired by the work and lives of famous fashion designers, including Louis Vuitton, Yves Saint Laurent, Gucci, Alexander McQueen, Ralph Lauren, and Christian Dior. Each one highlights a different aspect of its namesake. For example, Louis Vuitton is “more about pure movement, layered with a hint of comedy; it pokes fun at the traditions involved in fashion and life. Gucci, however, is about the Gucci family and its troubles; this section deals with betrayal and murder.”

“Fashion Briefs” balances lightheartedness and the darker side of things. Director/choreographer Autumn Belk says it’s a bit of an experiment for the company, as the piece includes text and theatrics in addition to the “just great ‘dance-y’ dance” they are known for.

So let’s show Code f.a.d. a big Texas welcome and go see “Fashion Briefs!”

Show Feature: “Amazonia”

May 8th, 2010 · Participants, Shows

Hey Fringe Dips,

This year, the HFF is proud to feature several dance performances for the first time in its illustrious history, including “Amazonia” from ChinaCat Productions. They’re coming to the Festival all the way from San An-frickin’-tonio! Whuh, what!

The ChinaCat company is made up of a number of dance professionals from that area. Maggie Lasher, who runs the company, told us that she hopes Festival-goers “will feel like they are experiencing a different world,” during their piece, a world that is fast-paced, fun and colorful. She’s also an avid animal lover, and “Amazonia” is one of several animal-themed pieces she has produced. It’s about “a group of lizard creatures who are shown the light.” Sounds brilliant!

The piece incorporates a very animalistic and unconventional fusion of jazz and contemporary styles, as well as the traditional Maori art of poi. And there will be fiery, glowy illuminations! Don’t miss it!

Show Feature: “Reach For The Stars”

May 4th, 2010 · Participants, Shows

Hey Fringe Breads,

This year’s Short Film Showcase will include “Reach For The Stars,” presented by Doorman Actors Lab and HTX Media Production in association with Pen15 Productions.

It stars Houston’s hottest up and coming talent, The Lovey Lydia Lara, fresh off of a whirlwind trip around Mexico where she interviewed locals, experienced the regional cultural traditions, and communed with the spirits of the Aztec empire…all in preparation for this role.

“Reach For The Stars” also reunites two of Houston’s most infamous actors, Will Morgan and Salvador Chevez (infamous El Guapo style). When clashes of this magnitude occur between two titans of celluloid, you can be sure that someone in the audience will wind up pregnant.

Lydia and Will run producing theatre company Doorman Actors Lab. They’ve even got a play in the Festival too!

The film is produced by international fugitive Jo Hamna, who was recently freed from protective custody specifically to see this film completed.

“Reach For The Stars” is the directorial debut of Nathan Beattie. Nathan just completed his degree in film with a minor in droppin’ mofos who get in his face. Nathan is an active member of the international, clandestine organization known as Pen15 and heads up their media wing. He’s also the love child of Martin Scorsese and Leni Riefenstahl.

“Reach For The Stars” (or RFTS to the fanboys) was written by William Louis Jinajosa, whose mystery is only exceeded by his charm and edited by Dennis Perez.  Dennis is cool.

Also appearing are Robbie, Mike and Edie, Sandi and Russell, Bear, Nozomi, and Simple Justin. Each one has a fascinating story that we could not be bothered to learn.

In this film, the “definitive narrative of our generation,” a looming financial crisis forces a man to face the demons of his past in order to achieve his once dormant dream.  But first he must convince his loving, yet put-upon wife to forgive his past and stand by his side. Will he save his marriage and achieve his dream? Or will the failings of the past be the present and forever haunt his future? The only way to know for sure is to reach for the stars.

According to star (El Guapo-style) Will Morgan, the film “approaches the commonality of the subject from an outsider’s view, appropriating the ethos of the current indie cinematic conventions of the intimate domestic drama told through the prism of the mumblecore sub-genre; by doing so it forces a critical re-evaluation of every choice we have made in our lives… and, with absolutely no hyperbole, this film is the first step toward world peace.”

Wow, sounds like a good time!

Don’t miss Doorman Actors Lab’s “Reach for the Stars” as part of the Short Film Showcase at the Houston Fringe Festival!
